Why Your Upstairs Bonus Room Never Cools
Bonus rooms over garages are notorious hot spots. The fix is usually cheaper than you think.

If there's one room in Huntsville homes that fights the thermostat, it's the bonus room over the garage. Here's why it happens — and what actually fixes it.
The usual suspects
- Long duct runs that lose air before it reaches the room
- Undersized returns, so hot air has nowhere to go
- Uninsulated garage ceiling baking the floor above
- A single zone trying to serve two very different loads
Fixes that don't require a new system
Before anyone suggests a whole new unit, these targeted corrections solve most bonus-room complaints: sealing and insulating the ducts, adding or enlarging a return, adjusting blower speed, and balancing the dampers.
When a mini-split makes sense
For a truly isolated space, a small ductless mini-split can be the most efficient answer — cooling the room on demand without overworking the main system. We'll only recommend it if the simpler fixes won't get you there.
